What is the RaceWatch Field Size Index?

The index divides the month's figure by the average for the same calendar month over 2016 to 2025, then multiplies by 100, so 100 means normal for the time of year.

Are field sizes smaller than normal?

The British jumps index averaged 92.6 over the last 12 months, where 100 is normal. The British Flat index averaged 97.3.

How do Irish field sizes compare?

Irish Flat racing scored 104.3 in Sep 2026. Irish races usually have bigger fields than British races, which is why each country has its own baseline.

How is the index worked out?

Field size is the number of horses that took part, averaged over every race in the month. Months with fewer than 30 races show no index.

How is the Field Size Index calculated?

Average runners per race in the month is divided by the average for the same calendar month over 2016 to 2025, then multiplied by 100. An index of 100 means a normal month.

Why compare with the same month?

Field sizes change with the time of year, so each month is compared with the same month in earlier years. That keeps summer and winter racing on a fair footing.
