Winners are races won in the country that season, credited to the winning trainer. Top 10 share = winners by the ten yards with most winners divided by all winners. Concentration score = sum of every yard's squared share of winners times 10,000 (a Herfindahl-Hirschman index). Equivalent equal-sized yards = 10,000 divided by that score. Jumps seasons follow the official British and Irish dates. The current season is to date.

What is the RaceWatch Yard Concentration Index?

The index measures how much of each country's racing the biggest yards win: the top ten yards' share of winners, the top yard's share, and a concentration score from every yard's share.

Is Irish jumps racing more concentrated than British?

The top ten Irish jumps yards won 45.1% of races in 2025/26, against 27.8% in Britain. The equivalent-yards figure tells the same story.

Has concentration changed over time?

The top ten British jumps yards won 24.9% of races in 2014/15 and 27.8% in 2025/26. The charts show every season.

What does equivalent equal-sized yards mean?

Equivalent equal-sized yards is the number of equal yards that would give the same concentration score. A lower number means winners are shared among fewer big yards.

Questions people ask

How is the concentration score calculated?

Each yard's share of winners is squared, the squares are added up and the total is multiplied by 10,000, the Herfindahl-Hirschman method. A score near zero means winners are widely spread.

What share of winners do the top ten yards win?

In 2025/26 the top ten yards won 45.1% of Irish jumps races and 27.8% of British jumps races. The tables give every season since 2014/15.

Are British and Irish yards counted together?

No. Each country is measured on its own races, so an Irish yard's British winners count only in the British figures.

Can I quote the RaceWatch Yard Concentration Index?

Yes. Please cite it as the RaceWatch Yard Concentration Index with the season, country and code, for example Irish jumps 2025/26: top ten share 45.1%.

How often is the index updated?

The current season refreshes after every racing day, as results come in. Completed seasons are fixed once they end and do not change.
