Racing declarations: overnight and 48-hour runners

What is the difference between an entry and a declaration?

An entry puts a horse in contention for a race days or weeks ahead, while a declaration confirms the horse will run, and the final field, with each runner's weight and jockey, is set once declarations close.

Which races have 48-hour declarations?

Every British race uses 48-hour declarations, closing at 10:00 two days before racing for Flat and jumps alike, Irish races follow the same timetable, and the Grand National has declared three days ahead since 2026.

Can a trainer declare a horse and then not run it?

Yes. A declared horse can still be withdrawn and becomes a non-runner, and the declared runner counts on the declarations page exclude horses withdrawn since declaration.

When do Saturday's declarations come out?

Saturday's British fields, Flat and jumps alike, are declared at 10:00 on Thursday under 48-hour declarations, so the big Saturday races are known two days before they are run.

Which races are at the entries stage?

The entries table covers later days before declarations, showing each meeting's races, entries, the stage reached and its feature race, with 130 races at that stage now.
