Which racecourse pays the most prize money?
Ascot paid the most in Britain over the last 12 months, £23,520,018, and The Curragh led Ireland with €15,312,605. The course tables rank every course by total.
How much prize money is there per race?
A British race paid £18,906 on average in 2025 and an Irish race €22,988. Each course row gives its own average per race and per runner.
Why are British and Irish figures shown separately?
British prize money is paid in pounds and Irish prize money in euro, so the page never adds the two together. Northern Irish courses sit with Ireland, as their prize money is reported in euro.
What are the richest races this year?
The richest-races tables list the 20 most valuable British and Irish races of 2026 so far, with the winner, trainer and starting price for each.
Has prize money gone up in the last five years?
The course tables compare 2025 with 2020 for every course. Racing was suspended from March to June 2020, so the by-year tables give every year from 2025 down to ten years ago too.
Questions people ask
How is prize money counted on this page?
Each race total is the prize money paid to every placed horse in that race, added up. Course totals add every race run at the course in the window shown.
Which British course paid the most prize money in the last 12 months?
Ascot paid the most, with £23,520,018 across all its races in the last 12 months. The British course table ranks the top 50 courses and shows the average per race and per runner.
Which Irish course paid the most prize money?
The Curragh led Ireland with €15,312,605 in the last 12 months. Irish totals are in euro and are never added to British sterling figures.
Is prize money up this year?
British races have paid £163,698,710 so far in 2026, a change of 3.2% on the same days last year. Irish races have paid €60,106,883, a change of 7.9% in euro terms.
What does prize money per runner show?
Prize money per runner divides a course's total by the number of horses that ran there, so it shows what an average runner earned. A course with big fields can have a high total but a lower figure per runner.
