Fairest bookmaker odds: Bookmaker Spotlight

Every bookmaker builds a margin into its prices, and some build in far more than others. This guide shows how to measure it, and the live panel shows each firm's average margin over the last 30 days, refreshed daily.

Figures refreshed 16 October 2026 from the RaceWatch results database

Key takeaways

  • The fairest bookmaker odds on a race come from the firm with the lowest overround, the smallest margin built into its prices across every runner.
  • Over the last 30 days the average final show overround across 26 bookmakers was 121.5%, against 127.6% for morning prices.
  • Overround is found by turning each price into an implied chance and adding them up, and anything above a fair book of exactly 100 is the bookmaker's margin.
  • RaceWatch Bookmaker Spotlight has four views: Fairest Book, Early Bird, Late Mover and Biggest on Winners, each looking at the bookmakers from a different angle.
  • The bookmaker with the most best prices is not always the fairest overall, because a firm can be generous on a few runners while carrying a high margin elsewhere.

What makes bookmaker odds fair, and what is overround?

Overround is the amount by which the implied chances of every runner add up to more than a fair book of exactly 100. The closer a book is to 100, the fairer the prices.

Every price implies a chance. Evens implies one in two, 3/1 implies one in four, 9/1 implies one in ten. In a perfectly fair market the chances of every runner would add up to exactly 100. Bookmakers price above that, and the excess is their margin: the built in edge that means, over many races, they pay out less than they take in.

The table below works through a six runner race. The six implied chances add up to about 111, so the book carries a margin of about 11 over a fair 100. A rival firm pricing the same race with a total of 105 is offering noticeably fairer odds.

How does Bookmaker Spotlight show which firm is fairest?

The Fairest Book view measures bookmakers by overround, the margin built into their prices, so the firm with the tightest book stands out.

Doing this by hand for one race takes a few minutes; doing it for 20+ bookmakers across a whole day is impractical without software. Fairest Book does the sums, so the comparison is there when you need it rather than something to work out before every race.

The live chart on this page shows each firm's average final show overround over the last 30 days. The gap between the fairest and the least fair firms is plain to see, which is why the choice of bookmaker matters over a long period.

What do Early Bird, Late Mover and Biggest on Winners show?

Early Bird, Late Mover and Biggest on Winners look at the bookmakers from angles other than overall margin. Read them alongside Fairest Book rather than instead of it.

Each view answers a practical question about the firms whose prices you see. Early Bird and Late Mover, as their names suggest, look at the market at different points in the day, while Biggest on Winners looks back at races already run. None of them replaces checking the price on the race in front of you.

Read any view based on results with care: it describes the past, and it depends on which horses happened to win. The Fairest Book margin is the steadier measure, because it covers every runner in every race.

How do race type and field size change bookmaker margins?

Margins generally rise with field size, because every extra runner adds its own slice of margin. Big field handicaps usually carry higher overrounds than small conditions races.

A bookmaker pricing a four runner race has little room to hide a margin: each price is closely watched. In a twenty runner handicap the margin can be spread thinly across many outsiders, and the book total climbs. The free bookmaker margins page splits overround by field size and race type to show the pattern.

Morning prices usually carry more margin than final show prices, and the live figures above compare the two. Early markets are thin and firms protect themselves; by the off, competition and money have squeezed the margin down.

How much does bookmaker margin cost over a season?

A few points of overround on every race adds up. Across hundreds of races, the difference between a tight book and a wide one is one of the largest costs anyone following racing faces.

Think of margin as a fee paid on every stake. The fee is invisible on any single race, but it compounds across a season. Two people who make identical judgements, one always taking the fairest price and one always using a high margin firm, will see very different results over time.

That is why Spotlight exists. It does not tell you which horse to choose; it shows where the same choice costs least. The Odds tab on every racecard applies the same idea runner by runner, highlighting the best price across 20+ bookmakers. Exchange prices sit apart from the bookmakers because the exchange charges commission on winnings instead of building a margin into the odds, so compare them after commission.

Questions people ask

Which bookmaker has the lowest margin on today's races?

Bookmaker Spotlight's Fairest Book view compares the firms by overround, the margin built into their prices. The free bookmaker margins page shows each firm's 30 day average.

How is overround worked out?

Convert each runner's price into an implied chance and add the chances for every runner in the race. The amount above a fair book of exactly 100 is the bookmaker's margin.

Is the bookmaker with the most best prices also the fairest?

Not always, because a firm can offer the best price on a few runners while carrying a high margin on the rest. The overround across every runner is the fairer comparison.

Does the fairest bookmaker change by race type?

Yes, margins vary by field size and race type, and a firm that is tight on small fields may be wide on big handicaps. Checking race by race gives the clearest picture.

How often is the free bookmaker margins page updated?

The free bookmaker margins page is refreshed daily and covers the last 30 days. Prices on the racecard Odds tab are live, so check them race by race.
